Professor Receives Grant for Hubble Telescope Research

Siena College Assistant Professor of Physics John Moustakas, Ph.D. was recently awarded two grants from the Space Telescope Science Institute to analyze observations obtained using NASA’s premier space-based observatory, the Hubble Space Telescope.

Todd Synder: Nontraditional Hip-hop Teacher

Todd Snyder, assistant professor of English, speaks with a West Virginian twang and doesn’t care for the term “pop culture.” He is perhaps the last person that you would expect to be teaching a class studying hip-hop as poetry, called “Rhetoric(s) of Hip-Hop Culture.”

NEH Teachers Workshop Accepting Applications

Siena College has been awarded a highly competitive grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) to design and deliver the workshop titled “Heaven on Earth: Shakers, Religious Revival and Social Reform in America.” The NEH grant is worth more than $175,000.

Adding a Night to Their Senior Year

This past Sunday marked the fourth annual Senior Gift Kick-off Party where 150 students were welcomed back to campus a day early to celebrate their contribution to the Class of 2013 Gift. The senior class has raised $6,167, a record amount by the kick-off party, with a goal of $10,000.

STOP Conference

The acronym “STOP” stands for Students Together Opposing Prejudice. Siena celebrated the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on Friday, January 18 by welcoming hundreds of Capital Region middle and high school students to campus for the anti-prejudice conference.

Education Summit: Planning Siena’s Future

On Friday, January 18, approximately 150 Siena College faculty members, administrators and staff came together for “Education Summit: Planning Siena’s Future.” The Summit grew out of recent Cabinet discussions about articles appearing in the Chronicle of Higher Education and Time magazine (“Reinventing College,” Oct. 29, 2012) concerning the changing landscape for higher ed. Linda Richardson, Ph.D., vice president for academic affairs, and President Fr. Kevin Mullen ’75, O.F.M., Ph.D., invited the Siena community to the Summit to reflect upon Siena’s accomplishments and plan for the future.

Computer Cluster Adds Speed to Science

Siena College’s School of Science has added a High Performance Computing (HPC) Cluster that will enable faculty and students to conduct cutting-edge computational research in a variety of areas, including surface chemistry, biophysics and artificial intelligence. Purchased last month in collaboration with Siena’s Information and Technology Services, the HPC cluster has 480 GB of global memory, 20.5 TB of long-term storage and unlimited potential to provide students and faculty with opportunities to conduct important scientific research.
