Student’s Perspective: Service Trip to the DR

Ten Siena students traveled to Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic with Assistant Professor of Spanish Marcela Garces, Ph.D., and Assistant Director of the Damietta Cross-Cultural Center Valencia Constant for a service trip last month. The expedition spent a week teaching English to students of all ages, from pre-kindergarten to adults, and visiting the infirm.

Mark O’Brien ’95, Esq., jokes that he wanted to be a lawyer from the time he was a kid, after he realized he would not become the starting shortstop for the New York Yankees. The summer after his junior year at Siena, the English major interned at O’Connell and Aronowitz, an Albany law firm, where he laid the foundation for a career in the courthouse.

A New Approach to Science Research

Matt Bellis, Ph.D., assistant professor of physics and astronomy, was awarded a hardware donation valued at $5,000 from NVIDIA Corporation, a leading manufacturer of graphics processing units. He received a Tesla ​K​40, the latest processor released in November, that will allow students and faculty to conduct more research in less time.

President Announces Senior Administration Promotions

During the College’s first campus-wide meeting of the spring semester, President Fr. Kevin Mullen ’75, O.F.M., Ph.D. announced promotions within Siena’s senior administration, the President’s Cabinet. Mullen said that expanding the Cabinet will allow the College to more effectively pursue the goals outlined in Living Our Tradition: The Strategic Plan for Siena College.

Senior Class Gift to Fund Grotto

Siena seniors added an evening to their final semester by attending the 5th Senior Gift Kickoff Party at Massry Commons in New Hall Sunday evening. About 120 students caught up with each other over dinner and drinks and competed for raffle items like gift cards, Siena Saints apparel and Festa Vino tickets, all the while, raising funds for their class gift.

Computer Science Makes an IMPACT

With Siena students on break, the College’s computer science department opened its labs and classrooms to dozens of Capital Region high school students for the annual IMPACT Program. Students participated in a series of activities and some friendly competition designed to teach them about various areas of computer science.
