Siena College said goodbye to one of the most influential and revered members of its community Friday morning when former President and Professor of English Fr. Matthew T. Conlin, O.F.M., was celebrated at a campus memorial mass at St. Mary of the Angels Chapel. Fr. Conlin passed away on April 14, at the age of 92, at the Holy Name Friary in Ringwood, N.J. Conlin professed as a Franciscan Friar for 70 years and was a Catholic priest for 66 years.

Michael Pepe ’90, D.B.A., assistant professor of marketing, was recently recognized by the Journal of Product and Brand Management for an outstanding research paper. Titled “The Impact of Private Label Brands on Customer Loyalty and Product Category Profitability,” his paper was one of four papers chosen worldwide for this honor.

Political Science Department Chair and Pre-Law Advisor Len Cutler, Ph.D. has been recognized by the Town of Colonie with its “Gavel Award.” The honor is given annually to a teacher or college professor in Colonie who successfully brings knowledge of the courtroom into the classroom.

More than 160 members of the Siena community volunteered their time to “Join the Planeteer Movement,” helping to tidy up as part of the Student Senate’s 6th Annual Campus Cleanup Day.

As part of its history education lecture series, the Center for Revolutionary Era Studies (CRES) invited award-winning historian and Associate Professor of History at the University of Richmond Woody Holton, Ph.D. to share his work during a presentation titled, “Unruly Americans and the Origins of the Constitution.” Holton addressed several myths revolving around the adoption of the United States Constitution in 1787.

With a passion for building a more sustainable, peaceful and just world, Siena Students for Fair Trade (SSFT) hosted the second annual Fair Trade Colleges and Universities Regional Conference, uniting student leaders and grass roots organizations determined to make a difference.

The culmination of the 25th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King Lecture Series on Race and Nonviolent Social Change was an interesting speech by Bishop of Albany Howard J. Hubbard, D.D.

The Maloney Great Room was filled as Siena College celebrated its 21st Annual Scholarship Appreciation Dinner. More than 120 scholarship donors and 160 student recipients gathered together to share a meal and stories about personal and academic accomplishments.

As we prepare to recognize the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, Siena's History Department invited Stephenson Distinguished Lecturer at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Joseph Glatthar, Ph.D. to share his research. Glatthar uses military history to understand certain aspects of society and culture. He has recently become intrigued by the idea of employing qualitative and quantitative evidence to help understand important aspects of the Civil War.

Siena will recognize legendary New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter with an honorary degree during the College’s 2012 Commencement ceremony on Sunday, May 13.
