Jennifer Dorsey, Ph.D., professor of history and director of Siena’s McCormick Center for the Study of the American Revolution, was a panelist in a June 18 virtual town hall to discuss whether Philip Schuyler’s statue and similar monuments should be kept up to educate the public about history, moved to museum – or removed completely.

His full name was Marie-Joseph Paul Yves Roch Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de La Fayette, but he is known to history simply as Lafayette – a French aristocrat who was a military leader in the fight for liberty on two continents, and who was known not for embracing the elite but for supporting abolition and equality.

Okay, so those are extreme (and completely false).

But when you haven't visited a college’s campus or spoken directly with a current student or alum, it's easy to have a few preconceived notions about that college—based on pretty much nothing at all.
