Leadership Award Descriptions

Father Cyprian Mensing, OFM Award

This highest college award is presented to one (1) graduating senior who has demonstrated prominent leadership, outstanding scholarship, and exemplifies the highest ideals of Christianity and the spirit of St. Francis of Assisi.
Criteria: Nominees should have a GPA of 3.0 or higher. They should have distinguished themselves in a successful leadership role in various activities throughout their career at Siena College. It should be clear that, through their involvement in one or more organizations or activities, they have made a positive impact on the community and that the organization/activity in which they were involved would not have been as successful without their guidance and vision.

Father Noel Fitzpatrick, OFM Award

Fr. Noel served the community of Siena College as Professor of Philosophy from 1969 until his untimely death in 1974. During this time, Fr. Noel took an active interest in the lives of all Siena College students. As a Friar-in-Residence and a mentor Fr. Noel was always able to share his unique wit and perspective with students, offering them companionship, comfort, and compassion particularly when they needed it most. This award is the highest honor presented to a sophomore or junior who has demonstrated outstanding scholarship, taken a prominent leadership role, and exemplifies the highest ideals of Christianity and the Franciscan tradition.

Criteria: The nominee should have an earned GPA of 3.0 or higher and have successfully fulfilled leadership roles in various activities within the College community.

NANCY DEPORE CAMPUS INVOLVEMENT AWARD

Nancy DePore served the community of Siena College as Associate Dean of Students and Dean of Students from 1977 to 1994. As the first woman to hold the position of Dean of Students on the Siena campus, who was known always as a student advocate and was actively sought after for both her wisdom and her encouragement of campus involvement. This award is the highest honor presented to a freshman who has contributed significantly to the student body's social and personal development through involvement in co-curricular activities to a degree that makes an impact upon the campus community.

Criteria: The nominee should have an earned GPA of 2.5 or higher and have demonstrated and successfully fulfilled  leadership roles in various activities within the College community.

Br. Ed coughlin, OFM Green and Gold Award

As the 11th President of Siena College, Br. Ed Coughlin, OFM guided all aspects of Siena College to thrive and flourish in the spirit of it is "Ours to Do". Br. Ed was about relationships, but more importantly about being in the right relationship with all persons. He embodied our Franciscan tradition in his daily interactions with people. Br. Ed is remembered for his generosity of spirit, his humility, and his unwavering commitment to building a community where both the commonality and differences among people are nurtured, honored, and respected. The Br. Ed Coughlin, OFM Green and Gold Award is bestowed to a dedicated, faithful individual who embodies Franciscan values and is committed to building an inclusive, just, and caring community. 

Criteria: The recipient of the award is a student active in leadership and social justice for the betterment of the Siena community, with a minimum 3.0 GPA.

Jim Knust '70 Community Service Award

Jim Knust '70 was a strong and motivating force on the Siena College campus from the mid-1970s to the early 1990s. As a student and later as Residence Director of Ryan Hall, his impact on the communal life of the college was varied and pervasive. In 1975, he was named Director of the Campus Center: a position he held until his unexpected death in 1992. A well-beloved member of the Siena College community, he was known for his strong role in all organizations and activities on the campus. This award is presented to a student or student organization that has been instrumental in forming and strengthening bonds between the college and the greater Capital Region through participation in community service activities and/or projects.

Criteria: The student nominee should have an earned GPA of 3.0 or higher, and either the student or the organization nominated should have been instrumental in forming and strengthening bonds between Siena College and the greater Capital Region through participation in community service activities and/or projects.

Claire Ficarra '92 Programming Award

In the fall of 1991, the Student Events Board, formerly a committee of the Student Senate, reincorporated itself as an independent body within the student government of Siena College. Claire Ficarra, Class of 1992, was elected its first Chairperson and in this position helped to guide the SEB in its mission to provide events and programs for the life of the campus community. In her spirit, this award is presented to a student in recognition of devotion and energy to the college in activities, as a motivator of fellow students, and especially for commitment to the goals of Siena College in programming.

Criteria: The nominee should have an earned GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Walter T. Kicinski '62 Outstanding Commuter Student Award

Walter T. Kicinski graduated from Siena College in 1962. As a commuting student, he gave much of his time and talent in service to Siena College. In 1993, he joined Siena College's Board of Trustees and was elected Chair of the Board in 1999. This award is presented to a commuting student who exemplifies the values and goals of Siena College through dedicated service to student events, programs, and the communal life of the campus.

Criteria: The nominee should have an earned GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Father Hugh Hines, OFM Award

The Father Hugh Hines, OFM Award is presented to a representative from the Student Government Association (SGA) in recognition of enthusiastic participation in, and outstanding contributions to, the work of SGA. Students nominated need not be currently representing SGA, but may be a student who has represented SGA in previous years (SGA representation can include a Class Council Board Member). Must be nominated by a student.

Edward "Bud" Lennon '41 Award

Edward "Bud" Lennon was the first President of the Student Senate when it was formed in 1937.  The award that bears his name is presented to a student from any class year who displays exceptional leadership ability. The nominee should have been a great help to both the Student Senate and the Student Body and have served the student body through ways other than being a member of the Student Senate, although Senators may be considered. Must be nominated by a student.

SENIOR involvement AWARD

The award is presented to any full-time student of Senior status who has contributed greatly to the Siena Community throughout their four years of attendance. The nominee should have served the student body throughout Student Government (Student Senate, SEB, CSA,  and Class Council). Must be nominated by a student.

Organization of the Year

The award is presented to any student club or organization that has been a great help to the Student Body. Must be nominated by Student Activities & Leadership Development staff.

Club Sports Coach OF THE YEAR

The award is presented to any coach who has gone above and beyond to coach their club team. The nominee can be a Head Coach, Assistant Coach, and/or Advisor and must have at least one full academic year in their coaching role at Siena College. Must be nominated by a club sports approved player.

Advisor of the Year

The award is presented to an Advisor who has been a great help to their club or organization. The nominee must be an employee of the College who acts as the advisor to any club or organization and must be nominated by a student.

STAFF/ADMINISTRATOR OF THE YEAR

The award is presented to a Staff member or Administrator who has been a great help to both the Student Senate and the Student Body. The nominee must be a full-time employee of the College and must be nominated by a student.
