Katie Hohman '09
Partner, Sheridan Hohman & Associates
Hometown: Albany, NY
Major: Political Science & Minor in Religious Studies
Current Involvement:
- Board Member of the Albany Wine and Dine Council for the Arts
- Member of the Bull Moose Club, Albany, NY
- Citizens Budget Commission – New Leaders
Involvement while at Siena: Siena Women’s Swimming and Diving. As a member of the sports community I very much enjoyed volunteering at the Ronald McDonald House and cooking meals for the families.
How do you involve yourself in your community?
I’ve recently made an extra effort to get more involved at Siena College. I have volunteered for Accepted Student Days and have participated in the Political Science Alumni Event where alumni speak to current students about various career paths.
I have also made an effort to get involved with organizations and charities that benefit and support my local community. The Albany Wine and Dine for the Arts markets Albany's restaurants, chefs, and their innovative cuisine; educates consumers on healthy, sustainable agriculture; and provides sustainable funding for the support and preservation of the not-for-profit arts community in Albany, NY.
Describe a typical day in your life.
Being involved in governmental affairs it is very important to pay attend to the news at all times. I wake up every morning and read through newspapers, online publications, and local blogs. I prepare news clips that may be of interest to my clients. After that, I head to the New York State Legislative Retrieval System and read through newly introduced legislation and send any relevant legislation to my clients for review.
You always have to stay on your toes, one of the challenges working in New York state, working in politics, it’s how quickly things can move and really just trying to keep a clear head and being able to pivot if something changes.
How did your Siena education prepare you for the work you’re doing today?
My Siena education prepared me for what I do today and how I live my life every day. At Siena, I learned a strong sense of community, inclusiveness, and support. The professors at Siena very much prepared me for the “real world” and how to manage life outside of the college environment. I also had the amazing opportunity (provided by Siena) of interning for the Governor during my senior year.
Describe your professional progression since leaving Siena.
I have to admit immediately leaving Siena I was a bit lost, 2009 was a tough year to find a job and I wanted to make sure my next steps were beneficial to my future. I spent some time working at a hedge fund in NYC but realized it wasn’t my passion. I wanted to get into politics but again was unsure if I wanted to attend law school or honestly how to do it. I took a chance and applied to Saint Rose and enrolled in their Dual Masters program from History and Political Science. During Graduate school I began interning at a lobbying firm (via a good friend whom I graduated Siena with) and fell in love with it. I learned I have an aggressive but respectful temperament to engage in government affairs.

Advice for current Saints:
Place time and effort into your studies, develop strong writing skills (it’s extremely important), and enjoy every minute of it - time flies. The days are long, but the years are short!
Career advice for current students:
It’s important to never become complacent, choose to keep an open mind and continue to learn something new every day in order to grow. Do not underestimate the power of community and support Siena provides to their alumni.
