More than 160 members of the Siena community volunteered their time to “Join the Planeteer Movement,” helping to tidy up as part of the Student Senate’s 6th Annual Campus Cleanup Day.

“We are all stewards of this beautiful campus, and cleaning it up is a great way to give back to the community,” said Student Senator Nicholas Iraola ’12.

This year’s slogan refers to the 1990s cartoon series Captain Planet and the Planeteers. The children’s television show was intended to educate young people about the importance of keeping the planet clean.

Campus Cleanup Day Co-Chair Sarah Czelusniak ’15 said, “This day really brings the campus together and allows you to meet so many new people.”

The all-day event attracted many people, including students, faculty, staff and administrators who spread out across the campus to rake up leaves, clean out flowerbeds and pick up trash.

“All members of the community have the common goal of celebrating a clean campus for Earth Week, modeling directly after the values of St. Francis,” said Director of Risk Analysis and Project Management Sandy Serbalik, who has been involved in Campus Cleanup Day since its beginning.

Grounds Foreperson for Facilities Management Keith Volsky ’11 said the event is an important way to engage the whole community. “It helps everyone gain an appreciation and ownership of their campus.”

Thanks to the efforts of the Siena community, the campus has a fresh new look, just in time for the warmer weather.
