Siena in the News

Siena College Assistant Director of Admissions and Coordinator of Multicultural Recruitment Tony Rivera has been named a Forty Under 40 Rising Latino Star by the Hispanic Coalition NY, Inc.

This award is given by the Hispanic Coalition NY to people in the community who show dedication to the advancement of the Hispanic-Latino community.

“Receiving this award is truly a testament to the ‘each one teach, one’ philosophy that I have learned throughout my life,” Rivera said. “Siena College has provided me with the opportunity to travel all across the five boroughs and Westchester county sharing the Franciscan mission with prospective students. I am most appreciative of that. In addition, the joint venture with the YMCA's Latino Youth Conference has enabled me to stay connected to my Hispanic roots. More importantly, I have been able to provide the Hispanic youth with the opportunity to gain valuable information about pursuing a college education and share my personal story about overcoming adversity to achieve my personal and professional goals.”

Rivera is committed to increasing diversity enrollment at Siena and was nominated for the award by a past winner and Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs Alfredo Medina.

"I have witnessed Tony's genuine support of diversity initiatives, especially in attracting and recruiting historically underrepresented students to Siena College,” Medina said. “Tony's journey from his childhood years to the person he is today is remarkable and inspirational. Tony is a positive role model for Latino youth and that is why I nominated him for this important award."

Rivera was also recently appointed as chair person for the 2012 Latino Youth Conference and is currently a member of the Board of Advisors at the North Albany YMCA.

“I am very passionate about my community involvement,” Rivera said. “I am truly honored that the Hispanic Coalition considered my community involvement worthy of being acknowledge amongst the other recipients of this award. I am forever grateful.”
