The Siena College Red Cross Club kicked-off the semester with its annual February blood drive.

After a successful fall semester, the club was optimistic that the spring blood drives would yield similar results.

First-time donor Taylor Takats ’14 fought her fear of giving blood and decided she wanted to help the cause. “It really isn’t as bad as you think it will be, especially when you bring your friends for moral support. I definitely plan on donating again,” said Takats. She was one of the 23 proud first-time donors.

“It makes me happy to see everyone coming out to support the American Red Cross,” said veteran donor Katelyn Finneran ’14, who provided moral support for Takats. “Everyone should give blood if they can. Don’t be afraid!”

Although unfavorable weather conditions canceled many regional blood drives last fall, American Red Cross Account Manager Erin Wascavage said that there is plenty of blood available to those in need. “We are lucky that this winter has been favorable. There aren’t any major shortages, but we can always use the help.”

The club collected 207 units of blood during the drive, surpassing its goal of 173 units.

After working at a hospital, Amanda Tashjian ’14 saw first-hand the importantce of participating in blood drives. “For such a small school, it is amazing that we are able to donate so much,” said Tashjian. “It is a true testament to our service-oriented community."

The Siena College Red Cross Club is planning another blood drive this semester. It is scheduled for April 10, 2012.

Club members are also busy planning for the annual Red Cross Race, which raised more than $6,000 last year. This year’s event will be held in mid-April, with all proceeds benefitting local disaster relief.
