Students, faculty and staff filled the Sarazen Student Union recently to see their classmates, colleagues and favorite professors have their heads shaved. Again this year, Siena College's Gaelic Society hosted a special event for the St. Baldrick's Foundation called "Shaving the Way to Conquer Kids’ Cancer."

The St. Baldrick's Foundation is a volunteer-driven charity that has raised millions of dollars to fund research for childhood cancer. More than 50 members of the Siena College community participated in the event, during which they raised money through pledges to have their heads shaved. Their hard work and willingness to part with their hair raised more than $13,500 for the St. Baldrick's Foundation.

One of the few women who to participate was Tracey Boucher, a beloved member of the College's dining hall staff. “I did it for all of the Siena women,” Boucher said. “The St. Baldrick’s event is a great way to show your support.”

The Siena Men’s Rugby team and the Educators Against Childhood Cancer were the most successful teams to participate. The rugby players raised $4,155.00 and Educators Against Childhood Cancer brought in $2,845.00. Professor of Philosophy Ray Boisvert, Ph.D. raised $2,335.00, which was the most money raised by an individual.

Many Siena students also shaved their heads during the event, which is designed to show solidarity with children and adults who lose their hair as a result of cancer treament.

“I think the event is really inspiring," Lydie Kengne '14 said. "I'm proud the Siena community participates in such amazing things."
