Two things we want you to know on this topic: 1) The value of having shops, eateries, and convenience stores within walking distance of your dorm cannot be underestimated. Even if you have access to public transportation or a car, being able to get places by foot too can seriously make campus life easier and so much more fun. (Also, the exercise = two thumbs up.)
2) Colleges in urban settings aren’t the only ones with walkable surroundings! If you’re considering suburban areas, pay attention on campus visits to what is located nearby. Ask where students jog off to when they’re craving an off-campus coffee, or where they shop for last-minute flowers when Mom and Dad roll into town.
For us, Newton Plaza and Route 9 is where it’s at—and the best part is that it just keeps expanding. Here’s a sampling of what’s right around Siena College these days.
