Dr. Jean Mangun is Professor and Dept. Head of Environmental Studies and Sciences at Siena. She received a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from Columbia University (1972) and an M.S. and Ph.D. in Forestry and Natural Resources from Purdue University (1985, 1991). Her discipline-spanning training is reflected in the interdisciplinary nature of her research. At Siena, this expertise translates into teaching courses designed to prepare future environmental professionals to frame issues from multiple perspectives so that they can build collaborative solutions.

My Siena Experience
My Teaching Philosophy
My goal is to create a support system that fosters active learning while enhancing students’ critical thinking abilities and communication skills. I regularly assign group projects that require students to delegate, coordinate, and assume leadership roles. I feel privileged to help prepare the next generation of environmental professionals for the enormous challenges that they will face.
What I Love About Siena
I love to teach at Siena because it is not too large, it is not too small, it is just right... I know all the Environmental Studies and Sciences majors -- and they know me!
My Favorite Courses to Teach

Current Research
The common theme that unifies my research has been characterizing the identity and dimension of human impacts and recreational demand on renewable natural resources. My recent studies have addressed public perception of predator population disperal, effects of climate change on ice fishing participation, and regional watershed planning efforts. My research involves integration of social science research techniques (including: design, execution and analysis of public opinion and attitude measurement surveys; focus group facilitation and qualitative data analysis through a grounded theory approach) into an interdisciplinary framework for environmental problem solving.
